Amazon's 'Request Invitation': How High-Demand Toys Sell
On some high-demand items, Amazon swaps Add to Cart for Request Invitation. You ask once, Amazon emails an invitation if stock allows, and a timer decides how long you have to buy.
This guide is research-led: we have not handled these units ourselves. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission — it never changes a pick.Research-led, nothing handled. We may earn from links; it never changes a pick. How we choose
This page explains what Amazon’s Request Invitation button does and how to buy through it, from Amazon’s own help page, as How we choose describes. Nothing here was requested or bought.
PlayStation 5 Disc Edition Console (slim)
Good fit A household that wants disc games as well as downloads
Not for Anyone who needs a second controller in the box
Xbox Series X Disc Gaming Console, 1TB SSD
Good fit A player who wants the disc drive and the deepest rating base
Not for Anyone uneasy about reports of faults
Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box
Good fit A fan who wants the anniversary set from Amazon itself
Not for A buyer who needs it by a fixed date
Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet - Surging Sparks Elite Trainer Box
Good fit A gift that has to arrive before the holiday
Not for A collector set on the 30th anniversary cards
The button is a queue for items Amazon sells itself
Request Invitation appears on the product page of selected high-demand, low-supply items sold by Amazon, in place of the usual Add to Cart. Pressing it asks for the right to buy 1; it does not reserve or charge for anything, and any Amazon account can ask, Prime or not.
Amazon grants invitations in line with the units it has in stock, and keeps granting them as more arrive. Its help page calls this an ongoing programme rather than a single draw.
1 request per item, and a timer once invited
Amazon allows 1 invitation request per item, though you can request invitations for several different items at once. If you are chosen, Amazon emails instructions for buying.
| Step | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Request | Press Request Invitation on the product page | Once only per item |
| 2. Wait | Amazon matches invitations to stock in hand | Watch the email linked to the account |
| 3. Invited | An email arrives; the product page shows a timer | Buy before the timer ends |
| 4. Timer expires | The invitation lapses | Request a new invitation |
| 5. Not invited | The request stays in line for more stock | Nothing; it carries over |
It began with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X
Whether the button shows on either console today depends on Amazon’s own stock at the time, and only on the offer sold by Amazon. When it shows, the steps above apply; when it does not, Add to Cart works as usual.
PlayStation 5 Disc Edition Console (slim)
5,723 ratings at 4.7, praised for fast loading and 4K graphics, with the single controller the mixed note.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Edition | Disc, slim |
|---|
This is the current slim disc model, for a household that still buys games on disc. Owners rate the speed and the picture highly and call it worth the money. The complaint that recurs is the single DualSense controller, so budget for a second one if two people play.
Buy it if
- A household that wants disc games as well as downloads
Don't buy it if
- Anyone who needs a second controller in the box
Xbox Series X Disc Gaming Console, 1TB SSD
31,356 ratings at 4.7, liked for load times and 4K play, with reliability the recurring worry.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Storage | 1TB SSD |
|---|---|
| Output | 4K, up to 120 fps |
| In the box | Wireless controller |
This is the disc Series X the invite programme added in 2022, carrying far more ratings than any other console here. Owners like the load times and 4K play at up to 120 fps. Reliability is the worry that keeps coming up, with several owners reporting faults. The digital-only white version rates 4.8 on 2,175 ratings, but it has no disc drive.
Buy it if
- A player who wants the disc drive and the deepest rating base
Don't buy it if
- Anyone uneasy about reports of faults
The same mechanism now turns up on toys and collectibles. Amazon’s Top 100+ Toys list of 9 September 2026 told buyers of the Pokémon TCG 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box to look for the button.
Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box
4.6 across 76 ratings, a newer listing, with 9 packs and a full-art promo card.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Packs | 9 |
|---|---|
| Promo | 1 full-art card |
| Launched | 16 September 2026 |
This is the toy the invitation button matters most for this season. Request it once from the listing sold by Amazon, and treat any Add to Cart offer from another seller as a reseller price. It is a newer listing with few reviews yet, so the rating may still move.
Buy it if
- A fan who wants the anniversary set from Amazon itself
Don't buy it if
- A buyer who needs it by a fixed date
A third-party seller’s listing is not part of it
The programme covers items sold by Amazon. On a busy listing, other sellers may still offer the same item through Add to Cart at a price of their own choosing. Check who the seller is on the product page before buying a scarce toy from a seller you do not know.
Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet - Surging Sparks Elite Trainer Box
4.5 across 1,269 ratings, liked for its pulls and presentation, with value the mixed note.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Packs | 9 |
|---|---|
| Launched | 8 November 2024 |
This is the fallback when no invitation comes in time. It is a 2024 set with the same 9-pack box format and a much longer rating record. Owners enjoy the pulls and the presentation; value is where opinions split. Check that the seller is Amazon, since authenticity is a mixed note on busy listings.
Buy it if
- A gift that has to arrive before the holiday
Don't buy it if
- A collector set on the 30th anniversary cards
For what an Elite Trainer Box contains, see the Pokémon Elite Trainer Box, explained. For gifts that need no invitation, see Pokémon TCG gifts.
