Busiest Thanksgiving Travel Days 2026: When Not to Fly
The Sunday after Thanksgiving set TSA's all-time record in 2025, with 3,133,924 people screened. In 2026 that Sunday is 29 November. Here is the day-by-day pattern for flying and driving, and the hours to avoid.

This page maps 2 years of TSA, AAA and airline records onto the 2026 calendar, with Thanksgiving on Thursday 26 November, and lists 4 things that make a peak travel day easier, chosen as how we choose describes. The 2026 forecasts do not exist yet: TSA and AAA publish theirs in November, and neither had issued one on 17 September 2026. Nothing here was handled or tested.

Sunday 29 November is the likeliest record day
TSA screened 3,133,924 people on Sunday 30 November 2025, the Sunday after Thanksgiving. It was the most in the agency’s history, according to Airlines for America. That broke the previous record of 3,096,797, set on 22 June 2025.
The year before followed the same shape. TSA reported about 3.09 million people screened on Sunday 1 December 2024, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, which was a record at the time. In 2026 the equivalent Sunday is 29 November.
The airport pattern runs Tuesday, Wednesday, then Sunday and Monday
TSA’s 2024 forecast named 3 peak days: 2.8 million on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, 2.9 million on the Wednesday and more than 3 million on the Sunday after. Airlines for America’s 2025 forecast named Sunday and Monday after the holiday as the busiest days for airlines.
On the 2026 calendar, that pattern falls like this:
| Day in 2026 | Airport pattern from 2024–2025 |
|---|---|
| Tue 24 Nov | Peak outbound day |
| Wed 25 Nov | Busiest outbound day in 2024 |
| Thu 26 Nov | Not a forecast peak day |
| Sun 29 Nov | Busiest day of the period |
| Mon 30 Nov | Peak return day in 2025 |
TSA projected 17.8 million people screened over the 8 days from 25 November to 2 December 2025. Airlines for America forecast more than 31 million passengers from 21 November to 1 December 2025, about 2.8 million a day.
Drivers outnumber flyers by about 12 to 1
AAA forecast 81.8 million Americans travelling over Thanksgiving 2025, from 25 November to 1 December, a record and 1.6 million more than in 2024. Of those, 73 million were expected to drive and 6 million to fly. Another 2.5 million were expected to take a bus, train or cruise.
That split means road congestion affects far more travellers than airport lines. AAA had not issued a 2026 figure by 17 September 2026.
The worst hours to drive, day by day
INRIX’s guidance for AAA in 2025 put the worst traffic in the afternoons and evenings on almost every day of the holiday week. Moved onto the 2026 calendar, the same hours read:
| Day in 2026 | Worst time to drive | Best time to drive |
|---|---|---|
| Tue 24 Nov | Noon to 9 p.m. | Before noon |
| Wed 25 Nov | 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. | Before 11 a.m. |
| Thu 26 Nov | Minimal traffic | Any time |
| Fri 27 Nov | 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. | Before 11 a.m. |
| Sat 28 Nov | 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. | Before 10 a.m. |
| Sun 29 Nov | 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. | Before 11 a.m. |
| Mon 30 Nov | Noon to 8 p.m. | After 8 p.m. |
INRIX describes Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons as the most congested times before the holiday. For the return, it points drivers to Sunday morning.
Flying on Thanksgiving Day avoids both peaks
Thanksgiving Day itself does not appear among TSA’s forecast peak days, and INRIX lists minimal traffic impact on the roads. Leaving on Thursday 26 November and returning on Saturday 28 November or Tuesday 1 December avoids the 2 heaviest windows.
This page draws on screening and traffic figures only, and says nothing about which day has the lowest fares.
2 carry-ons and 2 small things for a 3-million-passenger Sunday
A record Sunday means longer waits at security, full overhead bins and gate-checked bags. The 4 below answer the 3 things that go wrong most on a peak day: a lost bag, a flat phone and a bag drop queue.
Apple AirTag (1st Generation), 4-Pack
4.8 across 47,796 ratings, read on 4 October 2026: 4 tags, so each bag in a family's pile can be found from an iPhone.

| Phone | iPhone only |
|---|---|
| Network | Apple Find My |
| Battery | Replaceable coin cell |
A tag in each checked bag shows where it is from an iPhone, through Apple’s Find My network, and the FAA allows them in checked luggage, which AirTags in checked luggage sets out. The AirTag 4-pack is the older model, so 1 pack covers a family’s bags.
It works only with iPhones. For a family with an Android phone, the Bluetooth tracker guide covers Tile.
Buy it if
- You are checking more than 1 bag on a 3-million-passenger day
Don't buy it if
- Anyone in the family uses an Android phone
Anker Zolo Power Bank, 10,000mAh 30W
4.5 across 15,307 ratings, read on 12 October 2026, with its own USB-C cable built in, so a flat phone at the gate needs nothing else.

| Capacity | 10,000mAh (37 Wh) |
|---|---|
| Output / input | 30W / 20W |
| Size | 4.32 × 2.58 × 0.98 in |
10,000mAh gives most current phones about 2 full charges, and the Anker Zolo has its own 5.4-inch USB-C cable built in, so nothing else has to be packed. At 37 Wh it sits well under the 100 Wh limit for a power bank in the cabin.
It will not charge a laptop at full speed. Portable charger mAh, explained covers how much capacity a travel day needs, and the Anker profile compares the 4 Anker banks.
Buy it if
- One phone and earbuds on a long travel day
- You forget cables
Don't buy it if
- You need a laptop charged too

62,751 owners have rated the Amazon Basics 21-inch spinner, and they call it good value, roomy and light for a hard shell. For a 4-day trip home, it holds enough to skip the bag drop.
Durability reports split, so it suits a few trips a year rather than weekly use. Measure it against your airline: carry-on size rules for 2026 lists the limits, and wheels count.

Travelpro is the company whose founder, a 747 pilot, invented the upright roller in 1987, and owners of the Maxlite 5 call it light, easy through an airport and roomy for its size. A softside case also squeezes into a sizer that a hard shell will not.
Durability and size reports split here too. The best carry-on luggage compares 7 cases against the sizer.
Buy it if
- You fly several times a year and want a light case
Don't buy it if
- You want a hard shell for checked travel
What these figures cannot tell you
TSA’s counts are national totals across more than 3 million people on a peak day, so they do not show conditions at any single airport or checkpoint.
Weather is the other gap. A winter storm over a hub in the week of 23 November 2026 would change every pattern on this page, and no forecast published in September can account for it. For a drive rather than a flight, NHTSA’s list of what to keep in the car is in the winter car emergency kit, and portable jump starters, compared covers the flat battery that is one of AAA’s most common holiday calls. Arriving as a guest, Thanksgiving gifts for 2026 ranks 10 by rating, led by card games for after the meal; hosting instead, Thanksgiving decorations for 2026 starts with the table.
