Boots and shoes, and whether a cobbler can save them.
The Edit — Footwear
Seven flats, from a foldable DREAM PAIRS pair that rolls into a handbag to an Amazon Essentials flat sold in a true wide width. The sole, the upper and the width decide which foot each one suits.

The Edit — Fashion
Both are sold as waterproof and both rate 4.6. Sorel seals the foot in a rubber shell with a felt liner; Columbia puts a seam-sealed membrane in a lighter boot. Pick by whether you stand in slush or walk through it.

The Edit — Fashion
Waterproof boots keep water out with a rubber shell or a sealed membrane; water-resistant boots rely on a treated upper that wears. Listings use the terms loosely, and it decides whether your feet are wet by lunch.

The Edit — Footwear
Resoleability is the line between a boot someone still wears in ten years and one that goes out with the recycling in eighteen months. It is decided by the sole construction, and it is rarely on the product page.

The Data — Footwear
Cemented shoes and boots have the sole glued on and cannot be resoled; a Goodyear welt or Blake stitch can. That is what separates a boot you service from one you replace.
