Luggage Scales, and Whether Yours Is Lying
A scale that reads half a kilo light is worse than no scale at all, because it produces confidence rather than a check. Four scales, and the one number to test them against.
This guide is research-led: we have not handled these units ourselves. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission — it never changes a pick.Research-led, nothing handled. We may earn from links; it never changes a pick. How we choose
These 4 luggage scales are ranked by rating, then by number of ratings, on the method in how we choose. A luggage scale answers one question, whether the bag is under the limit, and being wrong means an excess baggage fee at a desk with a queue behind you. No scale was handled or tested.

The number a scale has to be right about
Most of the world caps cabin bags at 7 to 10 kg, and an empty 21-inch hard case commonly weighs 3 to 4 kg on its own. Checked bags are usually 23 kg on a standard economy allowance.
That is the whole use case, and it is set out in full in the carry-on size rules. A scale reading 0.5 kg light against a 7 kg limit does not save you a fee; it produces confidence and then a surprise.
How the four compare
| Scale | Rating | Ratings | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Etekcity | 4.7 | 71,233 | 110 lb |
| travel inspira | 4.7 | 21,772 | Stated on listing |
| BAGAIL | 4.6 | 7,096 | 110 lb |
| KINGON | 4.6 | 1,814 | Stated on listing |
The evidence in this category is unusually deep for a cheap object. The Etekcity alone carries 71,233 ratings.

Owners report readings matching airport scales precisely, which is the only performance claim that matters in this category.

| Owners report | Matches airport scales |
|---|---|
| Praise | Works out of the box |
| Watch | Longevity reports split |
The reports here make the claim that matters: owners describe readings matching airport scales precisely, and confirm it does the job of keeping a bag inside its allowance and avoiding a fee.
Owners also note it works out of the box and is compact enough for international travel. Longevity splits, which is the pattern across this whole category rather than a fault in this one — a device used 4 times a year and stored with a battery in it is a device that fails in storage.

- You fly close to the limit and need the number right

Etekcity Digital Luggage Scale, 110 lb
71,233 ratings, more than every other scale here combined, and a display owners single out for being readable at arm's length.

| Capacity | 110 lb / 50 kg |
|---|---|
| Owners praise | Large, readable numbers |
| Watch | Reports of it failing at 1 month |
71,233 ratings makes this the most-reviewed scale here by a wide margin, and the consistent praise is for the display — big numbers, easy to read, which matters when the scale is at arm’s length under a hanging bag.
The reliability reports split, with some owners reporting it stopping after a month. That is the failure to plan around rather than avoid: check it before every trip rather than assuming it woke up working.
Buy it if
- You want the deepest owner record here
- You read a display badly at arm's length
Don't buy it if
- You want it to survive years in a drawer
The rest of the shortlist
BAGAIL Digital Luggage Scale, 110 lb, Backlit
Owners report it within a pound of airline scales, in a body about the size of a hand.

| Capacity | 110 lb / 50 kg |
|---|---|
| Display | Backlit |
| Watch | Battery life reports split |
Owners report it within a pound of airline scales, which is the right accuracy claim to make — a scale is useful if it agrees with the one at the desk, not if it agrees with physics. The backlit display earns its place in a dim corridor at 5am.
Battery reports split between a year of service and dying quickly, and the size — about a hand — is what makes it easy to pack and easy to forget about until it is flat.
Buy it if
- You weigh bags in a dim hotel corridor
- You want it to disappear into a packing cube
Don't buy it if
- You will not check the battery before a trip
KINGON Digital Hanging Luggage Scale
A comfortable handle and a large hook, which are the two things that decide whether a 23 kg bag can actually be lifted onto it.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Grip | Wide handle, large hook |
|---|---|
| Owners praise | Build quality |
| Watch | Weight lock reports split |
The handle and the hook are the specifications nobody thinks about until they are holding 23 kg on a thin strap. Owners rate the build quality and find it accurate and convenient.
The split is the weight lock. Some owners report it holding the reading and others report it not locking, which matters because a hanging scale is read after the bag stops swinging. If the number does not hold, you are reading a moving figure.
Buy it if
- You weigh checked bags, not just cabin bags
- A thin strap hurts your hand
Don't buy it if
- You need the reading to hold after you set the bag down
How to test the one you already own
Weigh yourself on a bathroom scale, then pick up a suitcase and weigh yourself again. The difference is the bag. A bathroom scale reads in 100 g steps at best and this method adds two readings’ error together, so treat it as a rough check rather than a calibration.
Then hang the same bag on the luggage scale. Agreement within about half a kilo means the scale is roughly right. A consistent gap means it needs zeroing or replacing, and a gap that changes between attempts means the load cell is failing.
What actually goes wrong
Few of the negative reports across these 4 products are about accuracy. They are about batteries dying between trips, displays that will not lock, and units that stop working after a month in a drawer.
Plan for that rather than for precision. Check it a week before the trip, keep a spare battery with it, and weigh the bag at home where being 2 kg over costs nothing.
It is the same argument as measuring a case before you buy it, which runs through the carry-on shortlist and the warranty piece.
