Do Ultrasonic Pest Repellers Work on Mice
Mostly not. Mice get used to a repeated sound, ultrasound stops at the first piece of furniture, and the FTC has challenged claims for these devices since 1985. What keeps mice out is a sealed gap and a snap trap.

This page reads what US regulators and a university pest programme have published on ultrasonic repellers and peppermint pouches, and what they recommend instead, as How we choose describes. Nothing here was handled or tested.

Ultrasound stops at the first piece of furniture
A plug-in repeller sends sound in one direction, and that sound fades fast with distance and does not reach behind a sofa, a fridge or the back of a cupboard. Those are the places mice nest. The University of California’s Pest Notes add that mice quickly get used to a regularly repeated sound, and find little evidence that any sound, magnetic or vibration device drives established mice out of a building.
A repeller that seems to work for a week has usually just stopped being new. The mice were frightened, then they were used to it.
The FTC has challenged these claims since 1985
The claims the FTC challenged then were that a device eliminates an infestation, works as an alternative to traps or poison, or makes other methods work better. Read a repeller’s listing today with those 3 in mind.
Peppermint pouches skip the EPA’s review
Peppermint and peppermint oil are on the EPA’s list of minimum-risk active ingredients in 40 CFR 152.25(f), which exempts a product made only from listed ingredients from federal pesticide registration. The EPA’s own page says it generally does not review those products or their labels; the maker decides whether it qualifies. An exemption means the ingredient is low-risk, not that the pouch keeps mice away.
Rodent repellent pouches made 2 of the top 5 places in Amazon’s Home & Kitchen New Releases on 3 October 2026, as mice move indoors for autumn. The University of California notes that mice often come indoors in autumn as nights turn colder.
Sealing gaps wider than 1/4 inch is what lasts
Exclusion is the most successful and permanent way to control house mice, in the University of California’s words. A mouse can squeeze under a gap 1/4 inch tall and through an opening 3/8 inch wide. Plug small holes with coarse steel wool or wire screen; foam, rubber, vinyl and wood get chewed through.
Alabrocon Steel Wool Mice Control, 2 Pack, 3 in x 10 ft
6,453 ratings at 4.5, plain steel wool owners pack around plumbing pipes, with split reports on rust.

| Material | Steel wool |
|---|---|
| Pack | 2 rolls, 3 in x 10 ft |
Alabrocon sells plain steel wool in 2 rolls, 3 inches wide and 10 feet long, enough to pack the gaps where pipes enter a kitchen or bathroom. Owners say it pushes into holes easily and keeps mice out around plumbing.
The recurring complaint is rust: some owners see it stain or break down within weeks, so it suits dry cupboards better than a damp crawlspace.

| Material | Stainless steel wool blend |
|---|---|
| Kit | Fill fabric, gloves and scissors |
Xcluder blends stainless steel wool with fibre into a fill fabric, sold here as a kit with gloves and scissors. Owners like the material for sealing entry points around a whole house, and stainless steel avoids the rust that plain wool can show.
Many owners say the included scissors cut it poorly, so keep a sturdy pair of snips to hand.

- Anyone expecting the kit scissors to cut it cleanly
| Method | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Ultrasonic repeller | Mice get used to it; little evidence it drives them out (UC IPM) |
| Peppermint pouch | Exempt from EPA registration; not reviewed by the EPA |
| Sealing gaps over 1/4 inch | The most successful and permanent control (UC IPM) |
| Snap traps | Recommended by the CDC to reduce rodents at home |
| Glue and live traps | The CDC advises against them: a scared mouse urinates, raising the risk of disease |
Snap traps clear the mice already inside
The CDC recommends traditional snap traps for mice already in a house, and advises against glue traps and live traps. Set them along the walls with the baited end touching the wall, in a T, behind the stove and fridge and at the back of cupboards. Bait each with a small amount of chunky peanut butter, and check the traps daily.
Tomcat Press 'N Set Mouse Trap, 8 Traps
1,704 ratings at 4.4, a snap trap owners find easy to set and bait without pinching a finger.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Type | Snap, press to set |
|---|---|
| Pack | 8 traps |
The Tomcat sets with a press, so it suits anyone nervous of a spring trap. Owners call it easy to set and bait, and like that the design keeps fingers out of the way.
Durability is the split: some owners reuse them many times, others get 1 to 3 good catches from each. With 8 in the pack, that still covers the walls the CDC points to.

- Anyone nervous of setting a spring trap
Don't buy it if
- Years of reuse; some owners get only a few catches each
Victor Metal Pedal Mouse Traps, 12-Pack
4,163 ratings at 4.2, the classic wooden snap trap in a 12-pack, with mixed reports on build quality.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Type | Wooden snap |
|---|---|
| Pack | 12 traps |
Victor’s wooden pedal trap comes 12 to a pack, enough to set pairs in a T behind the stove, the fridge and every cupboard. Some owners call them the best traps they have used; others found them ineffective.
Build quality draws the same split, with some traps arriving poorly assembled. At 12 to a pack, a weak one is easy to replace.
Buy it if
- Setting enough traps to cover every wall
Don't buy it if
- Anyone who wants to reuse a trap many times
Mouse traps compared ranks snap, electronic and live-catch traps, with what owners report about each.
The CDC’s rule for when to stop is that one: a week with no catch and no new signs. Mice that come back after that have found another gap.
Small flies in the kitchen or over the houseplants are a different problem with a different fix; fruit fly and gnat traps explains which trap matches which fly.
