Grow Light PPFD: What Your Plants Need, Not Watts
Equivalent watts is a marketing invention and lumens measure light for human eyes. Plants respond to photons, counted as PPFD, and almost no listing on the shelf prints that figure.
This guide is research-led: we have not handled these units ourselves. If you buy through our links we may earn a commission — it never changes a pick.Research-led, nothing handled. We may earn from links; it never changes a pick. How we choose
Plants do not respond to brightness. They respond to the number of photons in the 400 to 700 nanometre band landing on a surface, which is measured as PPFD in micromoles per square metre per second.
This page reads the light units against owner reports on 6 grow lights, ranked by rating and then by number of ratings on the method in how we choose. Nothing here was grown or tested.

Watts and lumens are the wrong units
Watts measure electricity drawn, not light produced. A 650-watt fixture with efficient diodes can deliver more usable photons than a 1,000-watt one with poor ones, which makes wattage a bill rather than a specification.
Equivalent watts is worse. It has no defined test behind it, and a listing reading 60W equals 350W is comparing against an unnamed reference nobody can check.
Lumens and lux weight light by human eye sensitivity, which peaks in the green that plants reflect. A figure tuned to the wavelengths a leaf throws away is not a growing measurement.
PAR names the useful waveband and is often used loosely. The measurement you want inside that band is PPFD, at a stated distance.
| Figure | Measures | Useful |
|---|---|---|
| Watts | Electricity drawn | Running cost only |
| Equivalent watts | Nothing defined | No |
| Lumens or lux | Human-eye brightness | No |
| PPFD | Photons per square metre per second | Yes, with a distance |
| DLI | Photons per day | Yes, the real target |
GooingTop 6000K Full Spectrum Grow Light
22,087 ratings makes this the most-reviewed grow light here, and owners buy it for low-light plants rather than for yield.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Format | Clip-on with timer |
|---|---|
| Owners praise | Timer, value, new growth |
| Suits | Low-light houseplants |
22,087 ratings makes this the most-reviewed grow light here, and the owner reports are honest about what it is for: low-light houseplants, new growth within a week, and a timer people actually use.
No PPFD figure appears anywhere, which is the norm at this end of the market. For a pothos on a bookshelf that is fine. For seedlings it is the gap the next section is about.
Buy it if
- You want the deepest owner record here
- Houseplants on a shelf or a desk
Don't buy it if
- Seedlings that need 200 micromoles or more
DLI is the number that decides growth
PPFD is an instantaneous rate. What a plant actually accumulates is the daily light integral, and the formula is simple: PPFD multiplied by hours of light multiplied by 0.0036.
So 300 micromoles for 16 hours gives a DLI of about 17. Two hundred micromoles for 12 hours gives about 8.6. Run the 300-micromole fixture for 8 hours instead of 16 and its DLI halves, to about 8.6.
Low-light houseplants are content around a DLI of 4 to 6.
Most houseplants do well between 6 and 12.
Seedlings want roughly 6 to 16, from a PPFD commonly cited at 100 to 300 micromoles rising toward transplant.
Fruiting plants need far more, and that is where the serious fixtures earn their price.
Running a modest light for longer is a legitimate way to hit a DLI target, up to the point where the plant needs darkness.
VIPARSPECTRA 450W LED Grow Light, Full Spectrum
4.7 across 5,304 ratings, with owners praising the dimmer specifically for lowering intensity during early growth.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Coverage | 4 by 2 feet, per owners |
|---|---|
| Control | Dimmer |
| Owners praise | Build quality, brightness |
4.7 across 5,304 ratings puts it top of the page, and owners describe the build as solid and single out the dimmer for lowering intensity during early growth.
That dimmer is the DLI argument in hardware. A fixture you can turn down matches a seedling’s 150 micromoles now and a mature plant’s 400 later, from one purchase.
Buy it if
- You want a dimmable fixture with a deep evidence base
- A 4 by 2 tent is the space
Don't buy it if
- A single houseplant on a windowsill
Distance changes everything the listing claims
Light intensity falls sharply with distance. Doubling the gap between a small fixture and a leaf can cut the delivered PPFD to roughly a quarter, which is why a PPFD figure without a hanging height is meaningless.
That is also why coverage claims are soft. A fixture rated for a 4 by 2 foot area delivers its stated intensity in the middle and considerably less at the corners, and the fall-off is steeper on cheap panels with no lens.
The practical method is to move the light rather than to buy a different one. Raise it if leaves bleach or curl, lower it if stems stretch and lean.
AC Infinity IONFRAME EVO3, 280W LED Grow Light
4.7 on a bar fixture with dimming in 10% steps and scheduled sunrise, which is how PPFD gets matched to a growth stage.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Coverage | 2 by 4 feet, stated |
|---|---|
| Control | Dimming in 10% steps, scheduling |
| Watch | Newer listing, 256 ratings |
4.7, the same score as the VIPARSPECTRA, and the features owners name are exactly the controls this article argues for: dimming in 10% increments, plus scheduling with sunrise and sunset ramps.
It is a newer listing with few reviews yet, at 256 ratings. Owners describe the coverage as even, which is the property that separates a bar fixture from a panel at the corners.
Buy it if
- You want to dim to a seedling PPFD and raise it later
- A tent or a defined growing area
Don't buy it if
- You want thousands of reports behind the purchase
FREELICHT 4FT Grow Light, 60W Full Spectrum
A 4-foot strip for a shelf of seed trays, where owners split on whether it is bright enough — which is a PPFD question nobody can answer from the listing.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Format | 4 foot strip |
|---|---|
| Owners praise | Easy to install, low running cost |
| Watch | Brightness reports split |
Owners split on whether it is bright enough, and that disagreement is unresolvable from the listing because no PPFD figure exists to check against.
What a 4-foot strip does well is even coverage across a shelf of seed trays, which a point source cannot. Hang it close, within a few inches, and the intensity question largely answers itself.
Buy it if
- A shelf of seed trays needs even coverage
- Running cost matters over a long season
Don't buy it if
- You need high intensity at the canopy
Full spectrum is a description, not a standard
The phrase means the fixture emits across the visible range rather than only red and blue. It has no threshold behind it and no test.
Red and blue diodes are more efficient per photon, which is why the old fixtures were purple. White-appearing fixtures are more pleasant to live with and let you see the plant’s real colour, which matters for spotting problems early.
Colour temperature figures like 3000K or 6000K describe appearance rather than photon count. Both grow plants; neither tells you the intensity.
SANSI LED Grow Light Bulbs, 2-Pack, 10W E26
Screw-in bulbs that work in any existing lamp, which is the right answer for one plant rather than a growing area.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Format | E26 bulb, fits normal lamps |
|---|---|
| Power | 10 W each |
| Watch | Bulb life reports split |
Screw-in bulbs that work in a normal lamp are the right answer to a common problem: one plant in a dark corner, and no wish to install a fixture.
2,103 ratings and owners reporting plants thriving through winter. Bulb life reports split, which is the usual weakness of an LED in an enclosed fitting where heat has nowhere to go.
Buy it if
- One or two houseplants through a dark winter
- You do not want a fixture on show
Don't buy it if
- You are growing anything that fruits
KingLED KP1000 Full Spectrum Grow Light
2,697 ratings, praised for brightness and cool running, with LED failures reported anywhere from weeks to a year.
Current price shown on Amazon. We may earn a commission.
| Owners praise | Brightness, runs cool |
|---|---|
| Watch | LEDs burning out reported |
| Watch | Fan noise reports split |
Owners praise the brightness and note it runs cool, which matters in a small room where a hot fixture becomes a second problem.
LED failures are reported from a few weeks to about a year. Diodes rarely fail; drivers do, and a fixture with no replaceable driver is disposable whatever its photon output.
Buy it if
- You want a panel fixture at a lower price
- Heat build-up is a concern in the space
Don't buy it if
- You need it to last several seasons
What to check before buying
Look for PPFD at a stated distance. If a listing gives none, the fixture is being sold on appearance, which is acceptable for houseplants and not for seedlings.
Then set the hours to hit a DLI rather than buying a brighter light, and buy dimmable if the same fixture has to serve seedlings and mature plants. An amaryllis flowering for Christmas wants at least 4 hours of direct sun, and when to plant one sets out the calendar. Indoor plants and indoor air get bought together, and the air purifier shortlist covers the other half. The same preference for a tested figure over a marketed one runs through air purifier CADR, and the fixed-output lesson is in why every space heater is 1,500 watts.
