Kids Tablet Parental Controls: What Each One Blocks

Amazon filters its own catalogue but not Netflix. Apple screens new contacts and asks before every download under 13. Google locks the whole device but cannot limit its system apps. The gaps decide the tablet.

Amazon filters its own shelf, not the apps you add

On Amazon Fire Kids tablets, the Amazon Kids Parent Dashboard sets an age filter from the birthdate you enter, and applies it to books, videos, apps and games in the Amazon Kids+ catalogue. Amazon’s own guide says the filter does not work on outside apps such as Netflix and Hulu, which need their own settings.

The dashboard is free on iOS, Android and at parents.amazon.com, and needs an Amazon account but not Prime. Time limits are set per day of the week, as a schedule, a total, or per activity. Learn First can hold back entertainment until a reading or education goal is met, which no other system here offers.

The web browser has 3 settings: off, hand-selected websites and videos chosen by the Amazon Kids team, or a filtered open web with specific sites blocked. Browsing history appears on the dashboard. These controls ship on every Fire Kids tablet.

The Fire HD 8 Kids suits a child of 3 to 7 whose whole tablet can live inside Amazon’s curated shelf. Owners like the screen size for small hands, the battery, and how quickly limits are set from a parent’s phone.

Its weak point is the one Amazon documents: Netflix, YouTube and any other outside app keep their own settings.

The Kids Pro is the same dashboard for a child of 6 to 12, with a slimmer case and an older catalogue. Owners often mention buying it for a 9- or 10-year-old, and like the case and USB-C charging.

The recurring complaint is the store: apps outside Amazon’s catalogue are harder to get, which is a control for some parents and a limit for others.

Apple controls contacts and downloads, not just time

On an Apple iPad, Screen Time works through Family Sharing and needs the child to have their own Child Account. On an iPad, Ask to Buy and Ask to Browse are on by default for children under 13, so every new app and every new website waits for a parent’s approval. Limit Adult Websites is on by default under 18.

Apple goes further than the others on communication. A parent decides who is in the child’s contacts for Messages, FaceTime and Phone, and a message from someone new stays hidden until a parent approves it. Communication Safety detects photos and videos showing nudity, gore or violence.

Screen Time Schedules set which apps work before, during and after school, with separate weekday and weekend routines. The newest controls arrive with iPadOS 27 and need every device in the Family Sharing group updated; older devices keep the previous version.

The iPad suits a child of 8 or more who will message friends and use outside apps, where contact approval and Ask to Buy matter most. Owners praise its speed and how long it stays useful, often into the teens.

It arrives with no case and no children’s catalogue, so a younger child needs a sturdy case before it is handed over.

Google locks the device but leaves system apps open

Google’s Family Link, on an Android tablet such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+, sets daily limits and downtime on Android 7 and later. When the limit is reached the device locks: no notifications, and no apps except any a parent has marked as unlimited. Limits follow the child across every Android device and Chromebook signed in to their account.

The gap Google documents itself is system apps, which cannot be given app limits. Parents can grant bonus time from their own phone, and Google Play adds separate content restrictions and purchase approvals.

The Galaxy Tab A11+ suits a family already using Android phones or Chromebooks, because Family Link carries the same limits across every device on the child’s account. Owners describe it as quick and easy to use, with a sharp screen, strong battery life and a microSD slot for more storage.

It is a general tablet, not a kids edition: there is no kids case or children’s catalogue in the box, and system apps stay outside Family Link’s app limits.

Which controls suit which age

For a child under 8, Amazon’s system is the easiest to live with: the catalogue is already curated, and the browser can be locked to hand-picked sites. That is why the Fire HD 8 Kids leads for ages 3 to 7 in kids tablets compared.

From about 8, children want YouTube, games and messaging, and Apple’s contact controls and per-app approvals start to matter more than a curated shelf. Whichever system you pick, the gap they share is outside apps: Netflix, YouTube and every game with chat each carry their own controls. For the hardware question, Fire HD 10 or iPad covers what the extra money buys.
