2 inches of memory foam is the safe first buy
Memory foam softens under body heat and weight, so it sinks where the hips and shoulders press and holds that shape. A 2-inch layer changes how a firm mattress feels without turning it into a hammock.
Linenspa makes the top-rated topper on this page and its 3-inch twin, and owners of the 2-inch version report better sleep and less back pain more than any complaint.

3 inches is softer, and owners report more tears

Latex pushes back where memory foam sinks
Natural latex is springier than memory foam: it gives under pressure and returns at once, rather than holding the shape of a body. The 1 latex topper here is 3 inches thick and certified organic under GOLS. Sleepers who feel stuck in memory foam often prefer it.
